YOU HAD A HEADACHE 🤕

February 18, 2020

Annalise,

I was sleeping with you in your new big bed when, around 5am, I noticed you kept rubbing your forehead. I asked why and you said it “hurts really bad.” For a kid who rarely complains, it had to REALLY hurt if you were talking about it.

We gave you some Tylenol, then we lied there together waiting for it to kick in. You and I talked about jumping in the waves together in Avalon and leaping off my hands in the pool at Larchmont. We talked about how excited we were for our trip to the Florida Keys next week, so we could escape the cold and splash in the ocean and pool together. We talked about The Greatest Showman and the Bearded Lady Funko Pop I got you for Valentines Day. I sang to you and told you some stories. After 30 minutes it was clear—the Tylenol did nothing. We knew we had to go to CHOP immediately.

The next 8 hours were not fun, to say the least. Honestly, I hope you don’t remember any of it.

I’m writing this Memory Book entry, 4 days later. We haven’t left CHOP. We don’t know when or if we will.

What we do know, is that you are amazing. We know you are comfortable, surrounded by your pandas 🐼 and the love of your family. We know, in the moments you’re most awake, you’re listening. We know, in the moments you can speak, we’re blessed to hear the soft and beautiful sound of your voice—especially when you indulge me in a knock-knock joke. And in those precious moments you squeeze a hand, we know you are with us and loving us back. Most importantly, we know you know you’re loved, and we’ll be by your side no matter what.
